Lee Allan Dowches, class of 1991, was a sophomore brother at Rho Chapter of Delta Tau Delta who passed away in September of 1988 as a result of injuries sustained when a ladder he was using collapsed. At the time of the accident, he was affixing wooden letters to the rear chimney of the chapter house. The letters still hang there today. Although Lee was a Delt for only a short period of time, he had a profound influence on everyone who knew him, both within Delta Tau Delta and outside the fraternity. As a tribute to their fallen brother and friend, Lee's pledge class members created a eulogy epitomizing the qualities, which Lee exhibited. This eulogy has become the ideal against which scholarship applicants are measured.

The golf outing was established in 1998 in support of the Rho Delt Alumni Scholarship Program. Since that time the outing has raised approximately $40,000 towards the program's endowment which is currently in excess of $305,000.

The scholarship program has awarded over $60,000 to undergraduates since its inception in 1998 - List of Award Winners.
